This awesome project is a flagship store for Chedraui that includes unique architectural programs and appearance with a green space for the community in Mexico City. Chedraui Santa Fe is a 2013 project with 188,196 square feet in size, designed by Rojkind Arquitectos in collaboration with PDT International for interior design.
Background
This new flagship store is commissioned by Chedraui for a complex in an unarticulated site that lacks pedestrian connectivity in the car-dependent development of Santa Fe. This area is characterized by a deficiency of parks and open space while the surrounding community also lacks a sense of place where there is no presence of local food producers in an area full of big brand name stores.
Programs
For this new store, a unique program and identity are proposed along with providing green space. The requested traditional retail space and parking component are also added with a rooftop terrace. This terrace houses a 1,725 square meter orchard and a 1,230 square meter market square, incorporated with a series of pathways connecting the two.
The orchard can be accessed by store patrons, allowing them to learn about organic farming and also purchase fresh produce. It is an awesome experience that contributes to the understanding of the farm-to-fork movement and an appreciation of food. Now, the market square accommodates local producers and also adding to the variety traditionally offered by the supermarket.
The new programmatic options now can be accommodated as the interactive and exploratory environment evolves. The building space also can be utilized as an event platform where local community groups and schools can hold children’s events, farm tours, workshops, educational programs, and much more.
Structure
The building facade is composed of 531 glass fiber reinforced concrete panels, giving a dynamic signature in direct contrast to the typical “retail boxes” for the store. There are also four large tensile structures that shelter the pathways and parking area to the orchard from the sun. These structures become a luminous landmark as well at night, glowing and sparkling.
