Community Centre & Day Care Delft by Jeanne Dekkers Architectuur: Two Buildings with Identical Structures

In order to replace a community center formerly located on Delft, a new community center and a daycare center have been realized by Jeanne Dekkers Architectuur. Together with the church, the two buildings can complete a new local square of the site and creating an attractive appearance with their identical structures. Community Centre & Day Care Delft is 1.000 m2, designed for City Council of Delft and completed in 2003.

The two buildings are cornerstones in the neighborhood’s orthogonal web. They also have identical structures with an angular brick section of two storeys that completed by a wooden volume. This volume faces the square. The angular volume and wooden volume are separated by a hallway so a ‘light corridor’ flanked by central spaces can be created.

The smaller rooms are on the outside while the larger ones are on the inside. The entrances are opposite to each other to increase uniformity. The youth club has a skyward inclining cassette, creating a unique spatial experience with its vividly green interior inside the building.

The bent brick facades match awesomely with the surrounding neighborhood’s character on the outside. On the courtyard side of the buildings, the wood matches well with the function of the buildings and the green playground’s atmosphere.
