The inhabiting space of the artist himself and the connection of his housing with its workshop/study is essential, but also the configuration of the space-workshop. That was the balance that needs to be done by Martín Lejarraga when he takes the House and Studio for a Painter project. The 211,98 sqm apartment in Cartagena requires the right urban element to get the characteristics the client demand.

The study, as a stay in a house, has its own requirements: it must have enough space to paint, store, move pictures of more or less format. It also needs to get natural light entry.

While the use of artificial light must also have a certain independence path since it can be offered as a place to visit and welcome customers. The interchangeable of these lighting systems is crucial to provide the overall vibe inside the building.

Martín Lejarraga took a complex technique in masking the building. From the outside, everything appears in what can be understood as the same building, but in reality, they are two buildings within one.

The patio as a hollow element emphasizes the absence of a vertical limit, meanwhile, the space above the ground is not the beginning of the building but its first floor and the floor of the last is not its end but the plan of an open terrace with a pool, overlooking the city again.

The key to formulating such a complex diagram of space in such a small area is the two facades. The exterior façade assumes gravity and environmental protection. Its size and material also discharge the interior spaces of all limited responsibility.

With such astounding exterior, the interior is drafted wth a looser foundation but still, the subject is all about fixed and practicable. The spaces inside the building are superficially treated according to the degree of intimacy of its adjoining space – standardized, modulated, and industrial.

The elaborate thought of the plan behind the project resulted in a massive industrial building that looks out onto the street with the volume of its two living floors, but in reality, there are four well-calculated ranges.
