Located near the Shugakuin Imperial Villa in Japan, House in Shugaku-in is a renovation project by Kazuya Morita Architecture Studio. The renovation of this old private house also includes renovating the existing Japanese-style room and an attic on the second floor. A heating and wood stove is also added for a warm life even in winter.

The existing atrium in the dimly lit kitchen space of this old private house has been regenerated by using insulation and equipment. Skylights are also installed with large glass windows to ensure brightness inside the interior spaces. For a warmer atmosphere, floor heating and a wood stove are added too.

The attic and existing Japanese-style room which remain in good condition are renovated while retaining the past atmosphere at the same time. The old fittings are also reused for newly installed kitchen equipment and storage so the existing and renovated parts don’t feel strange in this private house.
