Pivot House by Splyce Design: A New Family House with An Open and Interconnected Interior

Pivot House By Splyce Design 17

It is a 2018 project of a new family house located on an irregularly shaped lot in a Burnaby suburb, Canada. Pivot House is a 5600 ft2 house designed by Splyce Design for a young family of four, organized around an oversized three-storey triangular cutout. This house interior is open and interconnected with a play on the angular geometry to define the primary spaces.

Sloped to the front door steeply and pinched on the north end, the house footprint is shaped by the surrounding site that fans out on the south and allowing for broad walk-out living space inside the house. It is a family house organized around an oversized three-story triangular cutout in the roof and floors, marking the two main volumes’ intersection and the staircase location. This house space becomes brighter with sunlight beams across the adjacent concrete wall and also interactive socially as one moves between house floors vertically.

The interior of this house is open and interconnected with a play on the angular geometry to define the dining and living room on the main level of the house, including the master bedroom on the upper level that pivot off the house’s dominant east-west section.

On the upper and main floors, the deep roof overhangs emphasize the unique horizontality and breadth of this house portion and provide solar shading too. The kids’ and guest bedrooms can be found on the upper floor, including the flex room, informal eating area, and kitchen.

An intimate connection and access to the multi-use rear landscape can be provided thanks to the extensive glazing. On this landscape, there is a large grassed area with a wood deck, playful berms, and a sunken barbecue zone that can be used for all family members.

Punched windows are calibrated for awesome views to the distant mountain range and also privacy on the street side elevation. The house exterior is clad in two distinct materials: cedar siding and composite panel. These materials are used to articulate form and geometry, showing what is to be further revealed inside the house.
