Completed in 2013 by VJAA, Steel House appears as a long, low, dark red weathered steel surface. This awesome house is designed with structural shear walls made of weathering steel. For precise integration, this project also uses digital fabrication for its structure.
Design
The long, low, dark red weathered steel surface of this house blends smoothly into the surrounding foliage and also the colors of the Earth. The house’s upper storey opens to the stunning views up and down the valley beyond a discrete one-story entry wall of the house.
Structure
There are structural shear walls designed for this house, made of weathering steel. The delicately textured surfaces can define the house’s interior spaces, reorienting the view also from the mountains down to the creek and out to the terraces.
Details
It is an awesome project where digital fabrication is used for the wood, steel, and stone structure. This fabrication can enable precise integration and also complex patterning for the house. The result is a big modern house where people can enjoy the surrounding view from inside through the glazed walls and doors.
