Located in Gunflint, Minnesota, Dan and Caroline Mason request a simple retreat with enough sleeping area for their guests. Gunflint Lake Cabin is completed by VJAA in 2010 and designed with metal-clad ICF walls and details for the clients’ comfort especially in working.
Site
This cabin is adjacent to an existing resort and sited on Gunflint Lake directly, surrounded by a barely accessible area of fallen pines and rock escarpments. The clients need a simple retreat with enough sleeping area to accommodate their guests, storage for outdoor gear and canoes, and also a sauna and a screen porch.
Design
Due to the extreme site of this cabin, it responds to the access, views, and orientation pragmatically. Metal-clad ICF walls and details are also developed for this cabin, especially around fire resistance, energy efficiency, and the ability for the clients to work while the unique cabin interior is finished with standard tongue and groove knotty pine.
