House with large openings but with high privacy. This is the design philosophy of the NH25 Loft located in the city center of Amsterdam and signed by the architectural firm Standard Studio in collaboration with the architect Joyce Kelder.
In one of the canal houses built in the early 17th century, the architects Wouter Slot and Marc Brummelhuis created a modern house with an inner courtyard. The loft has 370 square meters, including a patio on which the public area and the main room are distributed.
From the street, a large double garage door marks the entrance to this basement house. The passage through the garage, where there is space for an old classic car and for bicycles, leads to the main space.
Between the entrance and the main area, a living room with home cinema very discreetly serves entertainment. The pre-existing space did not have direct natural light. To correct the problem, the Standard Studio study team designed an interior patio in the middle of the space, thus bringing natural light and air.
The Standard Studio also organized the use zones around the atrium. On the one hand the bedrooms, the bathrooms, and the office.
On the other hand, in a single space, the studio placed the living room, the dining room, and the kitchen.
To add more natural light, six large skylights were created on the ceiling that provides a lot of light in the spaces. Although the house is located in the middle of a residential yard, there is a lot of privacy, because there is no direct visible connection to the surrounding buildings.
The dining room is chaired by a large wooden table with uneven chairs, reducing the sobriety of the interior aesthetics that also features designer furniture such as the Eames chaise-longue or the Arco lamp.
In the private area, there is a large suite-style room with an impressive dressing room and part of the bathroom incorporated into the bedroom and open to the patio.
Neutral colors, cement mortar flooring, natural materials such as wood, steel, marble, selected vintage furniture and lots of works of art offer discreet luxury and refinement. The end result is a bright and lively space that matches the lifestyle of the owners.
